I am glad that George Bush FINALLY joined the voices of opposition, albeit in a very muted way.
Perhaps we should reframe our arguments regarding the continuation of domestic and foreign safety net programs in a way that will resonate with Republicans and Libertarians.
How about "Support foreign and domestic food and medical aid programs TODAY because dead people can't buy US products or vote TOMORROW"
I downloaded the list but can't bear right now to look at all that has been canceled. Too much... Lots of scary thoughts but a few stand out. BESIDES the harm all this will cause. There is still 3.5 yrs left so look at the damage that can be done in that time on top of this especially with a GOP Congress. Also it will take so long to rebuild from all this both domestic public health/research & global public health. As Dr Fauci recently told some grads he spoke to- it is now in the next generation's hands to deal' with all this & speak truth for science, public health, research, etc. This damage won't be undone in a few months or even a few years. My hope is young people will see the challenges ahead & act on it. Because otherwise it will continue on the downward spiral.
Bravo to your home state of Massachusetts, the town of Newton that will not permit unvaccinated children to return to school this fall! Outstanding! Here in California we have, “No Shots, No School.” Thank goodness! All public, private schools and child care centers throughout Los Angeles County were among the first to enforce this fall of 1987. Then in 2015, SB 277 was passed and the personal belief exemption (PBE) was removed for school immunization requirements, meaning students could then only be exempt for medical reasons. SB 277 first affected students who were entering seventh grade beginning in 2016, requiring them to have all required immunizations, which included the Tdap booster for 7th grade. Every month all our school nurses run a query to find out how many students at our school sites are not immunized. We then contact those families to help them get their children their updated missing immunizations. Whenever we receive new students in district, the front office staff is not supposed to allow them to begin school if they are missing any of their immunizations. For the most part it doesn’t happen. But every now and then a student will enter missing updated immunizations. This is why the school nurses run the reports to check. Aside from our medically fragile students who cannot receive their immunizations due to medical reasons. Our students who are considered homeless or any student that has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is not required to be fully immunized before school entry. However, the school nurses will still make the phone calls to try and help get these students immunized. At the high school I cover, we have approximately 1,200 students. When I ran my report for the end of June, I had 6 students who were missing updated immunizations. Letters were sent out and phone calls were made to hopefully get these students immunized before the 2025-2026 school year begins in August 2025. These 6 students either fall under the homeless category or they have an IEP.
