Regarding the NIH: the harmful impact is immeasurable. If I was a European, Canadian, Brazilian, Chinese or Indian grad student thinking about where to do my postdoc, this would already sway me away from a US university. Many of these nations, BTW, already fund their basic science research better than the US now does.
If I was a medical student interested in science, I would now think twice about getting a PhD and instead focus on getting into that lucrative dermatology or ophthalmology residency where at least I can pay off my loans.
What kind of leadership would do this? Whether driven by ideology, incompetence, or something more troubling, these actions reflect a reckless disregard for consequences. At best, this is gross mismanagement; at worst, it is authoritarianism in the making.
In regard to the global health situation, I believe that cruelty is the point. This administration has previously proven that people of color don’t matter as much. (Remember when he said why can’t we get immigrants from Norway). The purpose of all of this chaos in the first week is perhaps a way for him to solidify himself to his base that he is for America first. Thank you for taking the time to help us take a moment to breathe and feel a little bit better today.
Thank you so much for sorting this all out and keeping us up to date as you always have. You are appreciated!
Means a lot to get that feedback. Thank you!
Thank you Jeremy.

Please: Let's also think about nomination of Jay Battacharya as NIH director, see commentary from McGill University https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/medical-critical-thinking-pseudoscience/bhattacharya-decide-fate-medical-research
Thank you for posting this. I share your sentiments.

It's hard to know what they believe this achieves that is positive.
Thank you for providing this important information. This is all so horrifying!
