I hope you ask them why they aren't taking any steps to mitigate the spread of Covid. So many athletes have caught it already, many have competed while sick, some have had to drop out, and they aren't taking any steps to prevent transmission. And why don't the athletes themselves push for Covid mitigation? They have trained their whole lives for this.

Absolutely Stephanie! I am not happy waking up to headlines that athletes are coming down with covid-19 and can’t compete or had to compete while sick! All the Olympic Doc’s should have had one big zoom to discuss how they can keep their athletes safe from covid-19 months before the Olympics and then report to the Olympic Committee regarding their concerns! It’s not that difficult to provide the athletes N95 masks and rapid antigen covid-19 test kits so they can test daily. Plus all the Olympic Doc’s should have also had meetings with their athletes to remind them and educate them on how they can protect themselves from covid-19. Such as wearing their N95 mask while traveling. The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris has been nothing but one big covid-19 fail! Completely unacceptable.

I would love for you to interview this Olympic swimmer from Team USA (aka Team FlunkedBiology):

(If you're not on Twitter, that link goes to a quote from Seth Rider, a TeamUSA swimmer who told the BBC he's getting his immune system ready for swimming in the Seine by not washing his hands after using the bathroom. 😭)

During Fashion Week there was much talk about the bed bugs. Are bed bugs in Paris still a prob? The covid situation seems alarming there. Can’t get covid data in MA for July , they paused reporting July 3rd~ state data is down during the summer surge…MA data display resumes August they report in Boston Globe.

Swimming in that triathlon water makes me think of skin rashes. Also what animals, creatures live in that water?

Did you read the NYT article yesterday about the radiation public health issues in Tahiti and many cancers from the historic French nuclear testing? It’s a thorough and thoughtful article about the ‘poisoned paradise’ near the Olympic Surf wave and coral. It’s a moving article about public health by the wave area and the impact of Olympic visitors, plus the significance of the selection of this competition site.

Nice knowing you Jeremy. So sad to see you risk so much over some sporting super spreader event. You will be rubbing elbows with thousands of ppl who are spreading viruses without any care and the ppl you interview are the same ppl who are promoting this. A trip to the Olympics isn't your job..isn;t something you have to do. Its just foolishness no matter how many N95s you take with you.

Tennis Match today Paris “ feels like 92 degrees poor air quality “ Hot weather ~ the Olympic crowd fanning themselves in stands looking sweaty. Climate change is impacting outdoors sports, heat illness risk etc. How many Olympians have seen medical team for heat ailments this week in Paris ?

Have fun! The games have looked amazing and fun (and little masks). It feels so good to see the smiling faces of all the amazing athletes as well as all the humans. There are still some who are saying not safe, not safe. This is where I feel like we need help living with this virus. Would love to know how the team doctors manage the injuries with the athletes desire to push through almost anything!

Ha! It's hard to take your eyes away from the French Olympics and opulence, no doubt. Rome is burning. But seriously, highly polluted rivers around cities of many sizes with ancient to outdated wastewater systems, globally is nothing new. Been a problem for decades. My husband who's had a 45 year career in in environmental issues like this just shakes his head. In our own current city of Holyoke, MA, you can sign up (like many cities, nationally), for a warning system that tells you when the bacteria levels are high. Every time it rains we get the warning and nothing changes as it is quite expensive to fix these kind of infrastructure issues. So, now no one pays attention to the warnings. Desensitized. Apparently, the Mayor of Paris kept promising she'd swim in the Seine but had to wait till just a couple of days ago. Olympic officials say they have alternate spots for athletes to swim should the levels be high, still. The show will go on despite COVID, despite polluted water because we can't let those sponsors down.

Here's a Globe article about Matthew Collins, former head of BCBSRI, who went back to clinical medicine in metro Boston currently--great doc/great person--he was team physician for the rowing team and might be again:

curious if, other than Covid (as I have already read about that situation at the Olympics!) , if they still talk about any illnesses that have spread through an Olympic village in past Olympics. Am also curious if they tend to get involved in patching up Olympians with orthopedic injuries or if that is generally handled by the coaches/etc (suspect the latter) Thanks!
