This is quite the topic for a manel! Especially featuring an ER doc working in MA. Lotta amazing people doing deep repro work in those states that you could tap--folks who can speak specifically to the impact of bans on those most harmed by them now--as ever, BIPOC communities, those struggling to get by, and more.

(I'm sure you're great. I had two babies at Brigham, received absolutely stellar care. But.)

Hi,

I am very sensitive to this point and as a policy, I don’t participate in manels (cutoff being 4 or maybe 3 people, I guess, depending on the situation).

In this case, I planned this and think of it as a conversation between two friends. But I agree, we can hardly be definitive, and I’m already planning other conversations that will include vital voices and perspectives which, as you point out, are needed.

I am very appreciative for your general policy —genuinely, thank you— and might push you to consider that especially given the nature of the topic —and the fact that not just people with uteruses, but disproportionately Black, Indigenous and Latinae people with uteruses— are most impacted by this specific topic, “this just happens to be a general conversation between two good friends, neither of which are impacted by the topic the way those who do need abortion access are” and especially given that this isn’t a specialty topic for you—I don’t think “but it’s not three guys so it’s not a real manel” is coming across in the way you might hope. I say this in the spirit of warmth and invitation: choosing to postpone until it could be done in a way that you describe would be seen as a sign of strength and respect. Have done similar things when I couldn’t get the lineup sorted, sometimes to my own v deep consternation.

A vital voice on this subject to consider inviting into future discussions on this topic is Jessica Valenti, whose substack Abortion Every Day is a must-read of daily updates on all the ongoing aspects of this incredibly important issue.

I think Jessica’s perspective as a long time researcher/journalist on this topic would be a great matchup with the medical and legal expertise the two of you have to offer.

Thank you for recording as I was teaching! I am in Houston Texas so this hits very close to home! I would also love to know what you both think about the law that was passed in Texas that doctors can no longer refuse to accept unvaccinated patients!
