I would be interested in how these data correlate with other indicators at the county level. Are these also the counties with the highest alcohol consumption? Spousal abuse? Income? And so on.
Counties are not in any way uniform in terms of their physical size. I may have missed a note on it but county density should be utilized as a stand in for "size" because it should be like things that are being compared.
Agreeing with the previous comments about density vs. size, and correlation with other indicia, I'm still fascinated that Massachusetts has 5 of the 45 counties listed - 4 medium and 1 small (all at the other end of the state from where I live). Since Jeremy Faust also lives in Massachusetts, I'd be interested in his take on this. I'd always thought Massachusetts had some of the strongest anti-OUI laws - but of course laws only work if they're enforced.
