Our public health was already too lean and unable to push change to improve the health of Americans… but I’m afraid this is a case of people won’t know what we had til it’s gone.

As a primary care provider in home-based medicine and working with the most vulnerable… the pandemic is too recent. I’m still tired, and I’m not prepared for the uptick in suffering these changes are sure to cause.

I wish there was a heart of compassion and also heart-broken emoji for the healthcare workers and staff like you and Jeremy. And you particularly, as we are an increasingly a massive aging and disabled society with an increasing population of auto-immune diseases that start at an early age. We were just barely starting to consider gov support in people like myself living independently at home. (I have been disabled from MS and RA since I was 27, and now have CVID (genetic immune deficiency), breast cancer (mild), Hashimotos, hypertension, etc. I'm a wheelchair user.) When my sister had Inflammatory Breast Cancer recently (We lost he a year ago.) she had to move back from Germany to be with her son in a very rural community. They did not have PC doc. The town had only money for a PA. But she was more help to my sis than the Seattle and Houston oncologists who made huge errors in her care and diagnosis. And her workload was unbelievable. And what you all do is powerful. I'm so sorry the monsters have no idea or concern on the impact on you.

With respect to the dismantling of public health, we should also look to NOAA and the DOL, which are currently being targeted by Musk and his hackers. We risk no longer being able to have free and easily available warnings about severe weather. We risk OSHA being disbanded, worker safety regulations disappearing, and all the horrific workplace abuses and accidents that these actions will allow.

This administration does not care about our lives and livelihoods.

We must stand up against this. We must talk with our families and our communities about what is happening. We must maintain sustained pressure on our representatives at all levels of government to take meaningful action. We must remind our National Guard members, our police forces, and our military of their duty to uphold the Constitution and the law.

Honestly, I’ve always loved flying. But I have to say that it wouldn’t shock me if the FAA gets worse before anyone realizes how bad an idea this all is

Expand full comment

How can Musk take over FAA technology ? I read in NYT that he’s going to assess and look into FAA tech this is scary as hell does this mean tinker with ? Also, Musk is acting as Prez has he had a physical shared with the public ? Perhaps he has other diagnoses like mania ? T r u m p seems to have no boundaries as well and a change in personality to being oligarch driven with high impulsivity, inflated sense of self ~ etc ..speaking without judgment ~ We need to demand public knowledge of their personal health? Since they are acting manic. Signs and symptoms of manic behavior perhaps? Delusions of grandeur etc ? Moving beds into work buildings ? This is very hyper and very grandiose ~ very disorganized chaotic behavior ~ extremely concerning. Wow 😮

Holy crap, Jeremy. Nothing is slowing down that maniac's obsession. Even as Dems trying to get

court order by AM on Musk for trying to get in the Treasury data system. We shouldn't be surprised by what we're seeing, but we should be appalled and disgusted by their complete lack of morality. Did anyone call the Dem public officials in Atlanta yet ???? I heard Trump and Assoc. are putting numerous gov buildings on the market. It's all happening fast. Apparently, we are like-minded staying up working and paying attention. Only I don't have little ones around anymore. Don't forget your self care. Thanks for your attentiveness.

No clue. And yeah, time for bed. :)

Putting government buildings on the market ? Wow that’s impulsive and crazy

Expand full comment

It really is and since Trump is a developer and not worried about Conflict of Interest, it's likely he'll find a way to make sure he personally profits from it. And worse, he's making statements about developing Gaza like turning it into a resort.

I think it is important to emphasize that the deferred resignation program is, unsurprisingly, entirely illegal. Federal employees are being widely advised to not take the deal; even if the employee was already thinking of quitting, they may well have more protections if they are fired. (That said, Musk and his team of hackers are targeting the Department of Labor currently, so enforcement of current law is questionable.)

I'd also like to add that this "offer" is eerily similar to what Twitter offered employees after the Musk takeover. Many of the people who accepted *that* "fork in the road" offer remained unpaid.

This is total chaos to invoke total confusion and more chaos ~ awful, horrible reality for society and perplexing like a whirlwind hurricane / disrupting everything like a true catastrophe ( manic, impulsive hyper behavior on their parts it seems )

I just want to say I know this has to be tiring for you, but I commend and appreciate you being able to keep us updated.

This is not the new normal we need to call Congress asap. I called Senators from Louisiana, Alaska, Maine last night and Senator Warren MA ~ We must speak up and make calls to voice our opinions and share any facts or experiences with as many Senators and Reps as we feel comfortable contacting ~ it helps sharing opinions ~ because we’re still a democracy. Also, we can go to any community meetings or protests as action to inquire and ask questions, or demand answers intellectually.

That's all great. Thanks. We can also join local boards, Commissions, and non-profits that serve marginalized folks...Boards of Health, Commission on Disability, School Boards, Public Safety, Housing.

Who keeps letting them in the front door?!

I've been at the CDC since 2001. There is no one who isn't essential to the success of the world's premier public health organization. We are actively engaged in the following public health responses - Hurricane Recovery (Milton/Helene) for North/South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida; Dengue/Oropuche Outbreaks in Puerto Rico, Florida, and California; HPAI/H5N1 Outbreak in the US; a VHF outbreak in East Africa; and a global MPOX outbreak.

This is what I’ve been warning many about. Not to “be right”, but to “DO RIGHT”. And because my length of life experience professional and in advocacy (30 years) combined with my husband as a 45-year state and fed gov employee often holding senior level positions.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of devastation of what we will see and are already seeing from ground level to senior level Fed employees (and thus their families…

In addition to what you hear from Dr. Faust and his associates, from the various Environmental departments including EPA, NOAAH, US Fish and Wildlife, ground to top loss of jobs, like nothing even 40-year career professionals have seen, gag orders, and decimation of programs established and ones in the works...

My husband (who just retired from feds but still consults with them regularly was told this AM absolutely EVERYONE (from office secretary to senior level management) in one of those massive departments received an email and CONTRACT telling them they should consider leaving their position to get severance. They have already lost many, many this week to early retirement, new hires, and perm employees. My husband says he has NEVER seen anything like this in his long career, but we both expected it.

What else: Contracts are being pulled out of. In the Fed gov there is a dept responsible for managing contracts and they are being hit hard. Particularly on the DEI front for hiring contractors.

Really bad: The Fed EOPF (Electronic Official Personnel File ) has been taken over. They told my husband that employees past and present cannot access their files for future employment. These files include Performance, Payroll, Time in Service, Grade Level, Awards, and Annual Performance Reviews. And lots of personal and professional info in these.

He is also hearing of folks getting sick from this intense stress. I image you will be seeing examples of this in your ER…stroke, hypertension, heart attacks, and suicide. We’ve witnessed some of this at a lesser level with just temp gov shutdowns and change of gubernatorial and Presidential administrations. This will be much worse.

But this is not about panic. It is about striking a balance between reality and direct level approaches, even covert, to protect marginalized vulnerable people, protecting those who protect us while protecting ourselves. Not unlike the best approach to dealing with a deadly virus not unlike what med pros like Dr. Faust, and many epidemiologists taught us. You will all be finding out just how much we rely on fed programs and the people that get them out to us.

For professionals and others here: If you have a union, check with them now. If you at least have a professional org or association like the AMA, SAF (Society of American Foresters), etc. CONTACT them now and see what they’re doing to protect workers and programs. If they’re not doing anything, put pressure on them, in great numbers.

Face reality but stay level-headed and communicate, simple self-care, working together as endurance and compassion will be necessary, and definitely a different set of priorities. This will not just be cured with a Blue Wave. (Sorry for length but a lot has happened in just the last 48 hours.) shorter next time not taking from health topic.

Where are our checks and balances? The scariest part of so much is that no one is standing up on one side of the aisle? What are they so afraid of?

How can this be stopped? Can CDC officials refuse to cooperate?

They’ll be fired immediately if they don’t cooperate. Everyone there is in full on “do whatever I can to save this place” mode. Compromises are being made. It’s impossible.
