Data snapshot: Covid-19 levels by state, October 3, 2023.
We continue to update the Inside Medicine Covid metrics dashboard every week. However, you may just want a quick readout of your own state’s Covid-19 levels.
You want it? You got it. Below, you can find state-by-state outlooks.
First, some orientation. Covid-19 wastewater levels (the measured concentration of the virus’s genetic material found in sewage) are the best way to track cases these days, since most places aren’t reporting case counts. However, wastewater levels are reported differently around the country. So the CDC does not provide absolute levels. Instead, they tell us how this week’s data compares with previous weeks. That means that each state can be compared against itself, going back as far as the CDC has wastewater data. The problem is that many states didn’t start reporting levels until after the early Omicron mega-surge.
So, to give you the best lens on your state’s conditions, we are offering 6 lines of information for each state. This gives you situation on the ground and some historical context.
Start date: This is how far back the wastewater data for that state goes back.
Current Week Ranking: Out of all the weeks we have data for, how does this one rank? And: Of those weeks, what percentile does the most recent week’s data represent. Example: If a state is in its 70th percentile, that means 30% of the weeks were worse than this, and 70% were better.
Trend: How does the most recent week of data compare to the one directly prior. “Worse” means that levels are higher than last week. “Better” means levels are lower.
Last Time This High: Before the current week’s data, when were things last this bad? If this week is better than last week, the answer will always be last week (naturally). But, if this week is worse than last week, we’ll tell you how far you’d have to go to find levels as high as they are now.
All-Time High (Worst): When was this state’s peak virus level (since the data start date, anyway).
All-Time Low (Best): When was this state’s lowest virus level (since the start date).
We can do this for hospitalizations and other metrics, but we thought we’d try it out with virus levels first. (Let us know what you’d like to see in the Comments section).
