Healing With Pride: Mental Health in LGBTQ Youth.
Instagram Live, today, Friday June 21, 4pm ET/1pm PT. Join us!
Today, Friday June 21, at 4pm ET/1pm ET, I’ll be live in Instagram (on the MedPage Today account) with two experts on mental health and LGBTQ youth. This will be a lively and informative discussion.
LBGTQ youth face significantly higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts compared to their heterosexual or cisgender peers, with 45% having considered suicide and 14% making an attempt in the past year. According to a survey of LGBTQ people ages 13-24, a vast majority (84%) reported wanting counseling from a mental health care professional, yet more than half of those who wanted it (54%) did not receive it. Only 28% of youth mental health facilities in the US offered LGBTQ-specific services in 2020, a marginal increase from 25% in 2014.
Healthcare professionals have the potential to play a crucial role in improving access amid this shortage, but according to experts, medical schools are not adequately preparing future physicians to care for LGBTQ patients.
In this Instagram Live event, we will the mental health challenges impacting LGBTQ youth and the provision of equitable care.
I’ll be joined by:
